Anyone interested in World War II and especially the fighting in Germany and General “Blood and Guts” Patton will find this book outstanding.
It is an excellent record of the raid on the prison camp where all of the men and vehicles of the task force were lost. This is a short, punchy, surprisingly well-researched little account of the ill-fated and little known "Raid on Hammelburg," conducted by Patton's Third Army during the waning days of World War Two.
I say "surprisingly well-researched" because Charles Whiting, while a compulsively readable author who wrote history books in the style of novels was, well, also a guy who wrote history books in the /5.
